Prepares and tests specimens and prepares controls such as solutions and reagents. Performs specimen (test sample) processing and tracking. Uses judgment and initiative in planning sequences of tasks required to complete recurring assignments within established criteria. Obtains assistance from management (Manager, Supervisor or Sr. Tech) for deviations and unanticipated or unfamiliar problems.
Under supervision, receive, inspect and process specimens (test samples) for testing following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Help to maintain and track test samples, supplies and materials, as well as Specialty Plasma (anti-D, anti-HBs, anti-Tetanus) sample inventory.
Under supervision, perform immunological and/or serological test methods following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Manages test data, records and completes all documentation in compliance with GDP requirements and following established BPC procedures
Perform and document quality control tasks and maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.
Monitor inventory of reagents and general lab supplies as assigned. Provide updates to supervisor or designee when indicated.
Process Customer Operations (CO) special sample orders as assigned. This may require working in refrigerated (2 - 8 C) or freezer temperatures (-20 C or colder). Requested samples are located and packaged for shipment to other laboratories or customer per BPC SOPs and/or CO instructions.
Run specialized computer programs for designated assignments.
Shift work and weekend work hours may be required depending on workload demand.
Perform additional miscellaneous tasks as assigned. Must be flexible, change ready and available when necessary to support operations and workload priorities
Education Requirements - Associates degree (AS) or equivalent with specific training in a Medical Laboratory Technician program and Clinical lab training (i.e., hospital or vocational school rotation) with a Florida State DPR Medical Laboratory Technician License preferred. Bachelors of Science in the Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology or Chemistry preferred.
Experience Requirements - Minimum six month’s experience in a laboratory or biopharmaceutical setting.
Other Essential Knowledge: Good communication skills; ability to work well with others; be flexible and able to handle multiple priorities; works well under pressure; capable of performing testing following established guidelines without assistance; detail-oriented; exercise good judgment in apprising Medical Technologist II or supervisor when needing assistance or guidance. Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs. Ability to set-up, operate, program, disassemble, clean and quality control required laboratory equipment. Run specialized computer software programs. Use addition and subtraction involving copying, counting, and recording numbers.
Internal: Customer Operations (Specialty Plasma Program Managers) and Plasma Operations.
External: Contact occasionally with vendor field service engineers.
Decision-Making: Under supervision. Decisions made are almost always determined by specific instructions or existing policies and procedures.
Challenges: Use accuracy in testing to prevent failed runs. Ensure accurate reporting of test results and compliance with regulations (cGMP) and BPC SOPs
Working Conditons: Physical: Stands or sits 75% of the time to check and process samples, perform testing, organize and store samples. Lifts and carries bins weighting up to 25 lbs. 25% of time. Uses senses of sight, color determination, hearing, and smell. Uses finger dexterity to perform tests and operate equipment. Hazards: Exposure to contaminated waste and potentially infectious materials (human source products. Temperature extremes when working in cooler and freezer for extended period of time. Stressors: Meeting turnaround time for testing and other assigned tasks. Keeping up with workload demands.
