Grifols Shared Services North America, Inc Senior Manager, Environment & Engineering in Emeryville, California


Directly responsible for the management and execution of all engineering related activities carried out within Grifols Diagnostics Facilities Management as well as the management of Environmental programs in support of the site. This includes the management of internal company resources, (assets, financial), external professional Engineering and other firms as part of the execution of equipment, utility, facility modification, or expansion projects. This direct responsibility includes all support activities and functions necessary to ensure successful completion of Environmental, Project, Energy Management and Site Asset Management Objectives. Develop and implement programs to prevent environmental impacts. Delivers training, identifies, evaluates and eliminates environmental hazards and ensures site compliance with governmental regulations and Grifols Policies and Guidelines.

Primary responsibilities for role:

  • Develop and maintain Site Engineering policies, standards and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable requirements and to provide effective understanding of site engineering requirements and expectations.

  • Primary liaison with external agencies and partners.

  • Provide Environmental and Engineering consulting and support for projects undertaken at the site (capital and expense):

  • Ensure all capital projects have been reviewed for Environmental investment and impacts.

  • Identify, in the design phase, the environmental aspects of the new projects, with the aim of preventing and minimizing the possible environmental impacts generated by the facility once it is functioning.

  • Identify the possible environmental risks of the new or renovated facilities and put in place appropriate measures for the prevention of pollution.

  • Identify and put in place eco-efficiency measures which are technically and economically viable.

  • Identify the legal requirements, permits, licenses and conditions required for the phase of execution as well as the general functioning of the new facilities.

  • Identify and determine in all new projects whether there exist investments in fixed assets of an environmental nature.

  • Supervise the management of environmental issues generated during the implementation phase of the projects.

  • Engage, and serving as principal liaison with, professional Engineering firm(s), for the design and / or construction elements of projects being executed.

  • Ensure technical issues or changes arising throughout the project life cycle are resolved in line with overall project objectives of scope, cost and schedule.

  • Ensure all work undertaken is reflected accurately in up to date Engineering / project information files.

  • Ensure equipment and systems are incorporated into the appropriate operational and asset management systems (BAMS / Calibration / Preventive Maintenance etc.).

  • Ensure all work carried out and equipment installed is safe, effective and in compliance with the appropriate industry standards.

  • Drive reduction of energy consumption through engineering solutions, physical improvements and behavioral change.

  • Devise and maintain Site Life Cycle Plan(s) for Facility Assets (Bldg Envelop, Utilities, etc).

  • Any other activities as directed by the Director, Facility Management.

  • Participates in and/or leads the development of Grifols Environmental and Business Continuity strategies, objectives, goals and targets. Site program Regulated Substances Management, Biological/Chemical/Radiation Safety, Environmental Management, Emergency Management, Business Continuity Management, etc.

  • Assists with alignment of Environmental and Business Continuity organizations globally and closely supports site-designated staff through training, global site visits, program reviews, audits and/or technical support

  • Works with Grifols leadership and management to:

  • Assure appropriate systems and practices are in place to comply with all applicable Environmental regulations, and conform to Grifols policy

  • Create and implement appropriate levels of training and competence for Environmental compliance

  • Participates in all Grifols activities, including Grifols Emergency Management (GEM) preparedness activities, Grifols cross-divisional audits, and business reviews

  • Responsible for regulatory compliance related to hazardous materials management, hazardous and medical waste management, wastewater, neutralization systems, abatement, stormwater pollution prevention program, among others.

  • Point of contact for regulatory agency visits and compliance investigations.

  • Leads HazMat Emergency Response Team, ensuring capabilities in spill response and Environmental mitigation

  • Identifies hazards and evaluates loss-producing potential of systems, operations, processes and procedures, and recommends engineering and administrative controls for risk reduction.

  • Plans, develops and manages site procedures for adhering to local, state and federal Environmental regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in implementing and managing Environmental programs with relevant experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.

  • Direct experience with regulated environments (i.e. cGMP, OSHA, EPA) required

  • Design experience or owners experience in HVAC, plant utility systems (chilled water, glycol chilled water, tower water), process utility systems (purified water, WFI, CIP, SIP, compressed air and waste treatment).

  • Previous experience and working knowledge of Federal and State Environmental Regulations and experience with dealing with Regulatory agencies

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others. Extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Strong written and oral communications skills.

  • Ability to work in high stress environment, to perform multiple tasks, to make decisions and handle emergency situations


Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related scientific or engineering discipline


Minimum of (10) ten years' experience in pharmaceutical/biotech operations, with thorough working knowledge of plant systems, clean utilities, production unit operations and validation principles


Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements. Example: If a job level requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years of experience, an equivalency could include 8 years of experience, an Associate’s degree with 6 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience.

Occupational Demands:

  • May occasionally lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise manipulate objects up to 25 pounds in weight, and/or lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise manipulate objects up to 10 pounds in weight frequently or continuously.
