Interstate Blood Bank Red Cell Technician - Processing Center in Memphis, Tennessee

This position is responsible for processing of Whole Blood products and samples; Red Blood Cells products; and preparing customer orders per specifications and Standard Operating Procedures.



  • Fills customer orders for red blood cell and whole blood samples and/or units.

  • Uses the Acclaim computer to check for any units which may have tested positive for viral markers

  • Operates the Beckman Coulter cell counter.

  • Sorts all red cell units according to MCV.

  • Cleans and disinfects equipment and working area surfaces, as necessary.

  • Pools red cell and whole samples or units per customer orders.

  • Completes daily maintenance records.


  • Cleans the filters of the Beckman Coulter cell counter machines.

  • Prints all labels used in production according to SOP.

  • Submits all maintenance records.


  • Inventories red cell sorting room for adequate supplies. (PPE, softgoods, etc.)

  • Interacts internally with Processing Center employees and management and Quality Assurance.

  • Does not interact externally with anyone.

  • Performs all other duties as required/assigned.


  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.

  • One year of college, technical school, or Associate’s degree preferred.

  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Explicit attention to detail is required.

  • Must have excellent organization and follow-up skills.

  • Must have excellent problem-solving skills and ability to analyze situations in a timely manner.

  • Must have ability to organize and prioritize work assignments.

  • Must have ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must have ability to participate in multi-functional teams.

  • Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within The Interstate Companies and provide excellent customer service.

  • Proficiency with computers.

Typical Duties


Reaches across tables into storage cages and wall cabinets to obtain softgoods / supplies for preparation of customer orders.


Not required


Packs boxes of samples, units, and gallon jugs. May stoop or bend to prepare customer orders, using softgoods /supplies. Lifts boxes, full unit trays, and gallon jugs weighing up to 55 pounds.


Remains in stationary position up to 75% preparing and verifying customer orders, using softgoods / supplies.


Traverses Processing Center to perform various functions during routine job duties.

Hand/Wrist Use

Constantly prepares customer orders, using softgoods / supplies. Types on computer. Must have dexterity to handle sample tubes, use sealers, and clean equipment.

Observing/Seeing color

Discerns quality of product while reviewing and verifying customer orders with softgoods. Must determine accuracy of product labels and weighing equipment.


Hears alarms, timing devices, and lab equipment. Ability to hear messages and recall detailed information.


Communicates with processing center management and other processing center personnel while preparing and verifying customer orders.

Time Management

Manages the amount of time needed to perform tasks and meet shipment deadlines.


Remains in stationary position up to 75% preparing and verifying customer orders, using softgoods / supplies, typing on computer


Concentrates on the task at hand and minimizes distractions with moderate machine noise.


Reads and comprehends SOP’s, instructions, orders, forms, labels, and company policies.

  • Ability to work with toxic or caustic chemicals 20 - 30 % of the time.

  • Have exposure to cold conditions (storing and retrieving items in refrigerator and freezer).

  • Ability to read and understand documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, correspondence.

  • Ability to write short correspondence.

  • Ability to speak, answer questions, and or present information in small groups of customers, suppliers, or employees of the company.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to perform mathematical operations using units of US dollars, weight measurement, volume, and distance.

  • Ability to read a calendar, calculate and understand deferral periods, and calculate sample periods.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few variables in routine situations.

  • Ability to lift up to 55 lbs.

  • Daily attendance is required.

  • No travel is required.
